index finger pressed on the center of her desire.
She gasped and surged up against his hand. He clamped his mouth over hers and
plunged into her in one swift stroke, taking her breath. Taking her body.
They danced together in an easy rhythm at first, dipping and tucking, gliding
and swaying, then the tempo increased. The dream Nathan's hips heaved with the
full force of his powerful body. Rachel gasped, opening herself and tilting
her hips to take him all the way inside, then clenching tightly, trying to
hold on to him when he retreated for another thrust.
The pace quickened again. Rachel's erratic attempts at breathing kept time
with the slapping of their bodies and the grunts and moans of pleasure. She
tried to think, to memorize the moment, the sensations, but found herself
mindless. There was only heat and craving and the all-absorbing sensation of
Nathan's penis plunging impossibly deep inside her. Caressing parts of her she
never thought to expose to a man. Splitting her in two and making her feel

whole.
She raked her fingers down his back. Arched beneath him, hungry for him,
urging him on. His body quivered at her touch.
Her blood began to run into her core, like fluid swirling down a funnel. She
stiffened, helpless to control the gathering power of orgasm. Not wanting to
control it.
Time slowed. A second became an eon. Nathan moved above her in slow motion.
She stared into his eyes, and the figment of her imagination and the flesh
and-blood man merged. She felt his need, tenfold the intensity of hers, and
sensed his control, hanging by a tattered thread. She barely had time to
acknowledge that something was wrong, that he wasn't lost in the throes of
their lovemaking as she was, before she shattered.
The tidal wave of climax swept away all thought. All control. It blinded her.
Deafened her. All she could do was hang on, and feel. Feel the spasms wracking
her body like convulsions. Feel the thick spread of warmth between her legs.
The gentle floating back to reality as the dream faded.
"Shit!"
Rachel's eyes jolted open, but for a moment, her mind wouldn't process what
she saw because it didn't jive with what she expected to see.
She was on the couch again, and except for the boots she'd toed off earlier,
she was fully clothed, as was Nathan. He leaned over her, but was propped on
one arm to hold his weight off her. His other arm& She gasped for air and
choked. His other arm reached down inside the unsnapped waistband of her
jeans. His fingers were inside her, three of them. The last vestiges of her
orgasm rippled softly around his digits. His sex, though bulging boldly at the
fly of his black jeans, was safely tucked away out of sight. And definitely
out of her body. Her right hand was caught between his two powerful thighs,
cupping his testicles through rough denim.
She jerked her hand away. A flush screamed up her neck to her face.
It had all been in her mind? She'd been dreaming of making love while he'd
administered her a hand job?
And a first-rate hand job it had been, too.
Confused how that could be, she opened her mouth to ask him, but couldn't
find her voice.
He stared out the window, oblivious to her distress. His back was rigid, his
shoulders tense. He was breathing in giant gulps, like a man who'd been under
water too long and only just come up for air. The chords of his neck strained
with each gasp. A vein bulged in his neck, and despite the lack of heat in the
room, sweat dribbled from his temples down the side of his face in a steady
flow. Though he didn't move, his muscles bunched and released randomly, as if
a living thing were crawling under his skin. Trying to find a way out.
But it was his eyes that made her heart stop and brought back the memory of
the beady eyes glowing from the underbrush in the dream forest. For a moment
his eyes caught the glare of some sallow light outside. They glowed a dull
green.
Then he blinked, and the effect was gone.

"Goddamn it," he grated between heaving breaths. He pulled his fingers from
her and left her feeling as hollow as a cored apple.
She scrubbed her hands over her face. The clock on the mantel read one a.m.
"What is it? What's wrong?"
"Jenny Lovell just climbed out her bedroom window. She's on the move."
Chapter Sixteen
Nathan knew he needed to get off of Rachel quickly but he wasn't sure he
could move. His legs had turned to rubber, and no matter how hard he breathed,
he couldn't get enough air. Maintaining control of the images he had planted
in her mind had drained him.
Maintaining control of his own impulse to strip her clothes off and plant
more than just dreams inside her had nearly killed him.
Was still killing him. A slow, tortured death.
Just breathe, he told himself. In and out.
No, not a good image.
Just breathe.
Rachel pushed against his chest and rolled from beneath him. "We have to go."
The animal inside him sprang to life, reaching out to snatch her wrist and
hold her back. Drag her back, if he had to. He barely suppressed the roar that
rose in his throat.
"Nathan!" She tugged against his grasp. "She'll get away. We have to go!"
Her words sounded far away. The drums beating in his head drowned them out.
Above the din rose the echo of the ancient chant, calling him to his
obligation. Procreate. Populate the species.
He squeezed the delicate bones of her wrist with crushing force, saw her
wince, and flung her away with the last ounce of his willpower.
No! He would not give in to magic that had been done to him against his will.
He would resist.
Legs trembling like those of a newborn fawn, he stood.
Rubbing her arm, Rachel watched him with huge, luminous eyes. "Are you all
right?"
His laugh was weak and shaky to his ears, but genuine. He glanced down at his
aching dick, then raised his gaze to hers, somehow finding the strength to
wrench up one corner of his mouth. "Give me ten minutes and a bucket of cold
water, then ask me again."

They followed Von's girlfriend four blocks into alow-rent business district,
hanging back and dodging from shadow to shadow, as Jenny had a habit of
checking over her shoulder frequently, and they didn't want to spook her. She
turned south at the red light on Delta Drive and walked another half mile into
progressively worse territory.
